The Ounce Scale
Children's Center of Monrovia in Maryland utilizes an assessment tool designed to be used with infants and toddlers called The Ounce Scale. The teachers in our infant room observe and evaluate the development of the infants and toddlers that we care for. The Ounce Scale allows us to provide guidelines and standards for observing the behaviors of young children and as a result allows us the ability to provide information that parents can utilize in their everyday interactions with their children. The Ounce Scale allows the infant teachers to follow each infant and toddler through developmental guidelines and prepare activities that are individualized for each child.
Individualized Infant Care in Maryland
Children's Center of Monrovia focuses on offering infants the best possible care which is why one teach is primarily responsive for three infants; this allows the teacher to give the children the individualized care they need. A daily chart is completed for each infant, beginning with parent input at the time of drop-off, followed throughout the day with staff information to inform the parent of all facets of the infant's activities of the day. In addition to a daily chart, we ask the parents to provide the teachers with a care plan that is regularly updated to reflect changes in eating, sleeping, teething etc.
